During this encounter you may be in a daze oblivious to the outside world; but then it hits you. You know what's going on and it feels great. "Here is one of the brass telling me what a great job I'm doing." This hits the old ego with some velocity doesn't it? And just when you think it can't get any better, you realize that your colleagues are watching. That's what makes this form of recognition so doubly effective. While the executive is sending you off to Cloud 9, your colleagues are wishing the same thing would happen to them. We talked about this earlier. It's only natural. You're motivated to keep working hard and now your co-workers will also be turning up the juice. Get the picture?

Okay, now you can step back into your own shoes again. Another approach is to schedule the executive for a morning or afternoon visit, get everyone off the phone and have the exec utive recognize the deserving employees in front of everyone. Pre-shift announcement times provide a good opportunity for this. I have done this for many years and it gets the work shift off to such a positive start. While I realize that these visits may not be possible in some firms and geographically impractical in others, I am also sure of one fact. In the corporations and companies where these meetings are feasible they're not happening very often, if at all. Why not? It couldn't be due to a time shortage because it doesn't require much time. It can't be that executives don't like employee achievements because I'm sure they do. During consulting assignments, I find that the most common reason this is not happening is also the easiest one to change. Managers and supervisors simply haven't taken the steps to work this out with the necessary executives. Take a little time, folks, and make these executive visits a reality in your environment. The executives will love the results and so will you.
